The plot of the play is concerned with eight friends, all twenty-something in age, who live in Alaska- Stephanie & Ving, the cutest couple in the world; Patrick, a self-described "big ‘ol homo"; the wheelchair-bound Mary Jane (played in the original production by the marvelously handicapable Chandra Frank, in a role written specifically for a disabled actress); Dick and Rusty, roommates who have lived together (and shared girlfriends together) since High School; including Joy, the spunky malaprop-dropping bimbo; and the ebullient Victoria (played by Suzanne Johnson), who is always going through one trauma (and boyfriend) or another. And there is also Joel, the outsider to the clique, known by his AOL screen name “Haiku”, who narrates the play with a haiku before each scene, as well as trying to participate in the frolicsome parties, despite being completely out of his depth.
The title of the play comes from the colloquial term “Eskimo Brother”; i.e., two guys who have slept with the same girl are “Eskimo Brothers”. By the end of the play everyone is Eskimo linked to each other in one way or another, with relationships breaking up and reforming like styrofoam in a snow globe. The play is multi-sexual, with both Gay and straight relationships abounding, with just a soupçon of S&M. The diverse music goes from the bluesy “My Dear”, to the rocking “Damaged Goods”, to the funky and satirical “Yo Baby!”. ESKIMO has been variously described as “a musical chain of hearts” or “eight singers who can’t keep it in their pants”. Eskimo is a light-hearted look at romance, lust, and love in all of their many forms.
